There are a lot of different techniques that people use when it comes to studying. Some people prefer to study in short bursts, others like to study gradually throughout the day. And then there are those who believe in cramming – studying everything right before the test. Whichever method you choose, it is important that you find one that works best for you and stick with it! In this blog post, we will discuss some of the best study techniques for online learning and preparing for a test.

First and foremost, there are ways to set yourself up for success with your surroundings and your day-to-day routine. Not all things will work for all people, but there are options for everyone.

  1. Get a good night’s sleep: A recent study from MIT shows that it’s not as important to get a full 8 hours of sleep the day before a test or a big study sesh, it is more important to get solid sleep for at least 3 days in a row.
  2. Set a regular study schedule: One of the benefits of online learning is that it is flexible to your schedule. You can study at night or in the morning, but try and set a regular time for yourself so you can get into a rhythm.
  3. Create a designated study space: This could be at the kitchen table, your desk, or even just on the floor in front of the TV. The important thing is to have one spot where you feel comfortable sitting and focusing on your work. OR…..
  4. Switch up your study space: Sometimes staying in the same space for people doesn’t work. Switching up your study environment can increase recall performance. Instead of studying at home every day, try checking out a new coffee spot each week or heading to your local library. A change in scenery can improve both your memory and concentration levels.

Now let’s move on to some specific techniques you can use while studying.

Use flashcards: This is a classic studying technique that has been around forever for a reason – because it works! You can make your flashcards or use an app like Quizlet.

Color Code Notes: Studies have shown that color coding notes can make them easier for the brain to dygest, understand, and recall. Warm colors seem to be the best to use. For example, red for key points, highlighting important information in yellow, and bullet points in orange. ONLY COLOR THE IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

Create summaries: A great way to learn and remember information is to create summaries. This can be in the form of a mind map, chart, or even just bullet points. Write out what you need to remember in your own words so that you can better understand and recall the information when it comes time for the test. This is a great study technique for visual learners.

Make study guides: Study guides are similar to summaries, but they tend to be more comprehensive. They can include everything from key concepts and definitions to practice questions. Again, the goal here is to make things easier for yourself come test day.

Take practice quizzes: In addition to studying specific concepts, it is also helpful to take practice quizzes. This will give you a better idea of what to expect on the test and help you identify any areas where you need to focus your studies.

STUDY METHODS: SQ3R, PQ4R, Feynman Technique, Leitner System

Exercise Before Studying: Not only does exercise fight fatigue, but it can also increase energy. It can be a 20-minute workout at home or a brisk walk around your neighborhood. Anything to get your heart rate pumping. In humans, exercise improves what scientists call “executive function,” the set of abilities that allows you to select behavior that’s appropriate to the situation, inhibit inappropriate behavior and focus on the job at hand despite distractions

Eat healthy: Eating a nutritious meal before studying will not only help your body, but it can also improve your focus and concentration. Here is a fun link to 25 of the best Brain Foods.

These are just a few of the many study techniques that are out there. The important thing is to find what works best for you and stick with it! With a little bit of effort and a lot of focus, you will be able to soak up knowledge and ace that test in no time.

Happy studying!
